Ex-boyfriend of missing Massachusetts woman shot dead

An old friend of a Massachusetts woman missing in a Vermont case was shot dead Tuesday after being named a "person of interest" in the case.

Vermont State Police claimed that the body of 23-year-old Mary Anderson of Harvard University, Massachusetts, was found dumped in her pickup truck in Brattleboro, Vermont, at 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Anderson was reported missing over the weekend, and she and her truck were sought as part of the investigation into missing persons.

The woman was last seen around 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Hudson, New Hampshire.

After her body was discovered, police said they are looking forward to contacting Matthew Davis, 34, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

They said Davis was Anderson's ex-boyfriend and so he might have information about the crime that could be useful in the investigation.

Vermont State Police said one of its investigators found a person matching Davis's description when he was conducting a survey in the neighborhood Tuesday at about 7:45 p.m.

Vermont State Police and Brattleboro Police Department officers responded to the area and were on the scene at the time the police fatally shot the suspect.

No information was available on the cause of the shooting, but Vermont State Police said Davis was injured when trying to talk to him about the girl's murder.

Two soldiers and a Brattleboro police officer opened fire during the confrontation with Davis, who was armed with a knife.

The department added that Massachusetts State Police investigators were also present in the area.
